Cancer Prevention and Screening Programs

Genetic Testing & Counseling at Texas Oncology
In 2017, 107 unique patients were seen for a Genetic evaluation (40 with cancer; 69 without cancer). A total of 83 genetic tests were ordered.
- 9 were BRCA-only tests, 72 were Myriad panel based tests, and one was a PALB2 known mutation test
Results:
- 6 individuals were found to have a hereditary cancer syndrome
- Two BRCA carriers identified
- One Lynch carrier identified
- Three other mutation carriers were identified (one PALB2 and two BARD1 carriers)
- 25 individuals were found to have a variant of uncertain significance or a VUS. A VUS is a chance in a gene whose relationship to cancer is not currently known. The majority of VUSs are later found to be benign but a few are later reclassified as pathogenic. The lab that did the testing would contact us if a VUS is found in the future.
