Therapy and Rehabilitation Services

The Northwest Texas Healthcare System Therapy Center helps patients regain their independence and get back to living active lives. We provide numerous services including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech and language rehabilitation.

Conditions We Treat

We treat a variety of conditions including:

  • Amputation
  • Balance and vestibular disorders (including vertigo, unilateral or bilateral vestibular deficiencies)
  • Deconditioning
  • Lymphedema
  • Neurological conditions (stroke, spinal cord injury)
  • Neuromuscular disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease)
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Upper extremity and/or hand injury

Services We Provide

Physical Therapy

  • Evaluation and treatment for balance disorders
  • Evaluation and treatment of patients with neuromuscular conditions (this clinic has the only Lokomat® in the Amarillo area)
  • Evaluation and treatment of patients with neurological deficits following a stroke or intracranial surgery
  • Training of amputee patients in preparation for, and use of prosthetic limbs
  • Strengthening and instruction in functional activities for patients recovering from acute medical problems, trauma and surgical procedures
  • Instruction of patients and caregivers in safe, effective function geared toward independence
  • Instruction in self-care and home exercises to promote self-management of symptoms
  • Education on back care, posture evaluation and correction and prevention of falls

Occupational Therapy

  • Hand therapy: splinting, controlled range of motion exercises and edema control for hand and upper extremity injuries, reconstructive surgery and burns
  • Training for activities of daily living, including self-care and homemaking (we now offer a fully functional training kitchen)
  • Developing community reintegration skills, including money management, shopping and the use of public transportation
  • Evaluating and treating cognitive function, visual perception and ocular motor function
  • Assessing safety for independent living
  • Work conditioning to prepare patients to return to daily work (we now offer a BTE Simulator II that simulates hundreds of real-world job and daily living functions)

Speech and Language Rehabilitation

  • Articulation and phonology (production of speech sounds) services
  • Modified barium swallow studies for Dysphagia
  • Executive functioning and cognitive skills rehab
  • Expressive language rehab, including:
    • Answering questions
    • Making requests
    • Vocabulary and basic concepts
  • Nonverbal language rehab
  • Receptive language rehab
    • Comprehension of written and spoken information
    • Following directions
  • Social language/pragmatics and problem solving rehab
